Description

If you have not read any Gibson, you should probably start with the classic Neuromancer -- a remarkable work of fiction, especially considering that it was published inwhen the Internet as we know it was still far off. In Gibson's science fiction, the detail of his imagination makes him the master of creating and evoking unseen worlds. Everywhere she goes, however, Cayce senses she's being followed, which seems to be proven when she's attacked in the street.

Other interesting characters include several 'FFF' analysts, fetishists of old technology, a computer whiz who's supposed to help Cayce find the filmmaker, and more. She finds allies and enemies in unlikely places and everyone seems to have their own secret, multi-layered agenda. The story builds momentum when Cayce is commissioned by wealthy advertising egomaniac Hubertus Bigend to find the filmmaker so he can exploit the market power of its huge cult following, a quest that le her from London, to Tokyo and finally to a bizarre series of encounters in corrupt free-market Russia.

Fortunately, however, Gibson is a decent writer, so this flaw is offset by his interesting world and characters, enough to milltary a low four-star review. I enjoyed the book which essentially re guyy a thriller, as Cayce rushes here and there to discover something that unknown and hostile 'others' also want to know. Bigend suspects that the movie could be "branded" and released for big bucks, and wants Cayce, who is one of the avid followers of "the footage" -- to determine its unknown author. I consider William Gibson to be one of the finest prose stylists huberuts today; even if he wrote about dull or mundane topics, he would be worth reading for his diamond-hard prose. Guuy you aren't familiar with Gibson, this book might be the place to start.

It started out so well, but by the end I was struck with a feeling of, "who cares? I love the "mystery" of a whodunit book and felt that this was going to be an "easy-to-solve" storyline because it started out so guu. It does, however, possess some key elements of Gibson's haunted universe -- the melancholy longing for rare consumer goods from a past era, the uncomfortableness with the eseking of the corporate mafia, sophisticated military and intelligence equipment, the hard edge of high fashion, and a love of good old technological junk that still somehow manages to work -- discarded old computers and broken-down people.

With the science fiction sub-genre of cyberpunk, while there may be other authors, it is William Gibson who pretty much is the king of that field.

Nonetheless, I don't know if I'd call his novel Pattern Recognition cyberpunk: in fact, it's barely science fiction. Pattern Recognition takes place in the very near future and follows Cayce Pollard, a thirtyish woman with the ability to recognize what is cool long before most other people.
