I’m a big, big wine fan, so when I was invited to an organic wine tasting event at 1000 TRADES I was very excited. 1000 Trades is a really cool bar and kitchen in a listed building, brimming with character in the Jewellery Quarter. The owner Jonathan, was really welcoming and even got involved with the wine too which was good to see!
The wine tasting was led by Sam Olive of Wine Freedom and Tom Craven of VINNATURO and focused on Bag-In-Box (BIB) wine, which was so refreshing to hear since most people usually shun wine that’s not kept in a bottle.
We started the evening by each doing a taste test to find out what flavour profile we fit into (luscious, fresh, smooth, intense) which in theory would then correspond to the wines that we enjoyed drinking. I fell into the luscious category, in case you were wondering…
We tasted 7 organic wines over the course of the evening and my favourite had to be the Tempranillo as it had a lovely spice to it. The most surprising wine of the night had to be the Sangiovese Rosé which was so fresh and drinkable. I usually avoid Rosé because it never tastes how you think it should taste. Its always a mistake. But I’d definitely order this again.
Sam and Tom really knew their wine and gave a great insight into how the wines were sourced, produced and supplied and how BIB is the best means of making affordable high quality wine by cutting every possible cost (packaging – shipping – warehousing – delivery) except for the investment in the wine itself. This means that wine is a much better price, with less environmental impact. As Tom rightly said, when was the last time you even saw the wine bottle after ordering a glass of wine?…exactly.
I really enjoyed how informal and friendly the wine tasting was and how Tom and Sam encouraged us to ask questions and taste as much or as little of the wine as we wanted.
And don’t even get me started on this delicious cheese board… I’ll be going back to 1000 TRADES just for this beauty alone… It was a brilliant event and I met some lovely people too. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on similar events.
