Last night I went to a Spanish wine tasting event at The Sampler in Islington.
I’ve lived in Islington for 2 years and I’d never noticed this place (my bad :s) so I was keen to check it out and taste some wines from Spain’s less famous wine regions.
From the outside, The Sampler looks like any other fancy wine shop but once inside, what sets it apart are the installed dispenser machines that allow you to taste measures of a rotating roster of 80 different wines from inexpensive mid-week wines (!) to pricier wines for weekends and special occasions. You just load your sampling card with cash and then have the freedom to sample wine for a fraction of the bottle price which is erm, kind’ve brilliant…
I hadn’t come to The Sampler to taste wines in this way but I did make a mental note to bring my boyfriend here for date night to *try* my hardest to convince him that wine is well, lovely. The tasting was led by a lovely guy who really knew his stuff and encouraged us all to chat, ask questions and generally enjoy the wines! No complaints from me…
We tasted 8 wines in total from Cava and Doniene Txakoli to Pintia Toro. The samples were lovely and really generous and definitely got me excited about my upcoming trip to Madrid! After we’d finished the tasting, we were encouraged to finish the bottles which we happily did.
It was a really chilled event and everyone was really friendly and chatty, I’ll definitely be going back. Make sure you check it out and subscribe to their email, tickets sell out fast!
The Sampler can be found at 266 Upper St, London N1 2UQ.
